Australian Weekly Market Report

Comment
There was little movement in the average prices this week but there were some irregularities due to the quality of the offering. What is concerning to us is the dramatic change in the standard of wool on offer at the moment. This week’s selection was generally what we would expect later in the season. Yields are lower, micron is finer, strengths are lower, staple length is shorter and VM is starting to increase. All a result of the continuing and in some cases, worsening, drought conditions across eastern Australia. It’s not a good recipe for the general standard of wool we require for our Italian weaver clients. Crossbred types have continued their upward run with 28.0 to 30.0 micron adding another 8% and 10% this week respectively.

Forecast
We have the last of the designated superfine sales next week in Sydney. While we don’t expect big volume, most have sold during the season peak, there is always a few growers who have traditionally sold in this sale and continue to do so. It’s likely to contain a larger portion of fine hogget wool as they are shorn later than the adult portion of most clips. Anything good will continue to attract good support but the larger percentage of the offering is lower strength types, and these are softening due to the volume available.
